Step 1

Palette: Grumbacher Max Oils (water-miscable oil). French Ultramarine Blue (FUB), Cerulean (Ce), Titanium White (W), Burnt Umber (BU), Cad Yellow Lt. (CYL), Thio Violet (TV), and Winsor & Newton Oil (water-miscable oil) Permanent Alizarin Crimson. Also some Max linseed oil for ease of paint spreading.
1. Draw in some lines with FUB + BU and some water. Next I block in the big shapes of the near rocks with FUB + BU with a large brush and some linseed oil.

2. I continue blocking in the shapes. The water is Ce + W with a little BU + TV in areas to tone down the teal color. The far hills are made with browns, violets and blues.

Step 3

3. Now the sky gets started. FUB + W for the upper sky, with a transition to Ce + W + CYL towards the horizon for the pale turquoise color. The areas of warm peach color on the horizon are Aliz + CYL + W. The shades of the clouds vary from very almost white (W + CYL) to 2 basic shadow colors: warm (FUB + BU + TV + W) and cool (FUB + BU + W).

Step 4

4. Now more working on the sky. I blend and adjust colors after the block-in stage. Also I create the light foamy water with some of the sky colors.
5. For the final stages, there is more edge adjusting (blending to soften, or beefing-up color to enhance an edge and make it sharp). I try to see if things are in balance and that the water looks like it is darker overall than the light-filled sky. I unify colors in the far trees to make it more blue-grey with only hints of warm light for some early sun rays. Some near rocks are fine-tuned with light and dark areas, others in the middle area are too dark and I add a touch of grey to make them receed in the distance.
